The Danske Bank Group has set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions from air travel by 15% from 2008 to 2010. We reached this objective by making our travel policy more restrictive and by offering alternatives to air travel.
From 2008 to 2009, we reduced CO2 emissions from air travel by 35%. The decline was owing the following three factors:
- our active effort to reduce unnecessary air travel
- less travelling because we completed our large integration project at Sampo Bank, Finland, in 2008
- the financial crises
From 2009 to 2010, CO2 emissions from air travel increased by about 3%. In 2011, we saw an increase of 18%. To investigate all opportunities to reduce our CO2 emissions from air travel, we will focus on alternatives such as teleconferences and eMeetings in 2012. We will do this by creating a target team with the objective of setting a new target of reductions in the coming years.

TelePresence
One reason for the decline was that it became possible for all employees to use the Group’s 27 TelePresence studios in 11 countries. The studios allow staff and management to hold meetings with colleagues in other countries without travelling. The large screens give the staff the experience of sitting around a table in the same meeting room.
eMeetings
We continously improves our eMeeting facilities, which also serve as a substitute for travel. eMeetings are a tool that all employees can use externally, with customers and suppliers, as well as internally. Each eMeeting participant links up via his or her PC and is in contact with the other participants via the screen and a telephone or PC headset.
