More than 40 primary schools took part in Northern Bank Science Counts, now in its second year. This fun programme is designed to help primary school children see the application of maths and science in everyday life through a range of exciting experiments and activities.
The programme was developed in partnership with, and delivered by, the award-winning W5 science centre, and it is offered to all primary schools in Northern Ireland. The schools selected for Northern Bank Science Counts take part in one of two ways:
- A programme for rural schools: an introductory workshop and a maths-science demonstration conducted by W5’s educational team at the school.
- A class visit to W5 intended for larger schools with a maths focus: The chosen schools visit W5 and take part in a problem-solving challenge, followed by an exploration of W5’s exhibits.
In 2008, some 2,745 children took part in Science Counts. The participating schools described the workshops as a great help in teaching, agreeing that Science Counts was a highlight of the school year, and recommended the programme to others.
