Young peopleYoung people

According to surveys, there is a large difference between what young people think they know about personal finance and what they actually know. But the Danske Bank Group’s surveys also show that most young people want to know much more about money and personal finance.

This is why the Group has developed the Dream On game and the Mind Your Money website for young people. The primary target group for Dream On is the 15-17 year-olds, and Mind Your Money is aimed at the 18-27 year-olds. But irrespective of age, all young people can benefit and learn from both initiatives, and the age limits should not be seen as too fixed.

Dream On
Dream On was launched on 9 November 2011 and is the most recent initiative under the Danske Bank Group’s Financial Literacy programme. The game will be rolled out on an ongoing basis in the countries where the Group has activities.

The purpose of Dream On is to stimulate young people’s interest in and knowledge about personal finance. Players will be faced with challenging questions and dilemmas based on their own dreams, and the game focuses on the fact that healthy personal finance provides better opportunities for planning your life and reaching your financial dreams.

In Dream On, players can earn credits and karma that can be used for fulfilling their financial dreams. On Facebook – the preferred social platform among young people – players can invite their friends to play and show their points statuses and dreams.

The game has been developed on the basis of quantitative and qualitative questionnaire surveys among and interviews with 15-17 year-olds and input from two experienced game experts. Also, the game was developed in co-operation with a number of experts, including:

  • Mette Reissmann, Partner at Spiir, and consumer spokesperson in the Danish Parliament
  • Birgitte Tufte, professor, head of children research and marketing at the Copenhagen Business School
  • Johannes Andersen, associate professor, researcher of youth culture at Aalborg University

Mind Your Money
Intended for 18-27 year olds, the site was developed in 2009 and rolled out in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway in 2010. Its purpose is to improve the financial skills of young adults by providing financial information closely related to relevant life situations, such as travelling, starting studies, starting a home and having children.

Mind Your Money offers an educational and entertaining experience that helps young adults achieve important personal goals. The site provides simple tips, tools, calculators, polls and tests that develop various financial skills. It also uses interactive features to help prepare users to manage the major financial issues in their lives.

Mind Your Money was developed on the basis of quantitative and qualitative surveys of and interviews with 18-27 year olds that gave an in-depth understanding of their financial awareness. It is our ambition that young people having interacted with Mind Your Money should be able to better understand and to some extent apply the basics of personal finances.

Meeting the young where they are
Accessibility is a Danske Bank Group core value. It is important for us to meet the young people where they are. Therefore we launched a Mind Your Money page on facebook in Denmark in 2010. Here four carefully selected advisers from Danske Bank share tips and advice on personal finance with the users of the facebook page.
