Provinsbanken Provinsbanken

Provinsbanken was founded in 1846 and, apart from Nationalbanken in Copenhagen, was Denmark’s first bank. The bank joined the Danske Bank Group through the merger in 1990.

1846 – Denmark’s first private bank
Provinsbanken dates back to 1846, when Fyens Disconto Kasse was established by a group of Odense merchants under the leadership of Lorentz Bierfreund. It was the country's first private bank.

1967 – merger with Aarhus Privatbank
In 1967, Fyens Disconto Kasse merged with Aarhus Privatbank, which was founded almost 100 years previously, in 1871. The merged banks were renamed Den Danske Provinsbank.

Over the following years, Den Danske Provinsbank merged with a number of other regional banks.

1986 – renamed Provinsbanken
In 1986, Den Danske Provinsbank officially changed its name to Provinsbanken.

1990 – merger with Den Danske Bank
Handelsbanken, Den Danske Bank and Provinsbanken merged in 1990, continuing as Den Danske Bank. By the time of the merger, the original Fyens Disconto Kasse had grown to the fifth-largest bank in Denmark.
