Ratings from the three major agencies, Standard & Poor's, Moody’s and Fitch, serve to classify borrowers according to creditworthiness. For their long-term ratings, all three agencies use rating scales from A to C, in which A ratings are the highest.

The agencies assign ratings to various organisation and entities, including companies, financial institutions, countries and specific issues.
