The acquisition of the two Irish banks Northern Bank (Northern Ireland) and National Irish Bank (Republic of Ireland) from National Australia Group in the autumn of 2004 represented the first acquisition according to the Group introduced strategy of growth through acquisition in Northern Europe.
Once the acquisition had been approved in early 2005, the integration of the banks was initiated, and in the Easter holidays of 2006 the two banks’ products and services transferred from the systems of National Australia Group Europe to the Group platform.
Following a programme comprising more than 2,500 staff, about 3,300 new PCs were installed, and a new network of 100 MGB connections to Denmark and 2 MGB connections to all branches was commissioned.
The Group also used the integration to compile its experience from this and previous integrations into a model for future integrations.
