I have worked as an it developer in the Danske Bank Group since September 2006, and at the moment I am working on an adjustment of the online bank to make it adaptable for Finland when Sampo Bank is converted to our platform in Easter 2008.

Co-operation across the Group
A large part of my job is to define the requirements in co-operation with the other developers. There is a high level of co-operation across the organisation and a lot of documentation that must be in order before we begin to construct the solution. Although I am an it developer, I still have a lot to do within business and requirement development as well as documentation. We do not code all the time - not at all. Currently I am working on a prototype that is coded in Javascript and html.
Shared framework that makes it easy to change departments
I began as a trainee in it development in fall of 2006, and this has given me the opportunity to work in several departments. I have so far tried two different departments and, although the product systems in the departments are quite different, I was also able to take a lot with me and use it in the next department. The development model that we use for all development projects gives us a common understanding and a shared foundation – regardless of which platform and product system you are working with. The common framework makes the change from department to department much easier.
I am still part of the Graduate Programme and I have not decided whether I want to take the specialist or the generalist road after the course. I hope that my Graduate Programme will give me the basis to make a reasoned elimination, when I choose my future direction. There are so many opportunities that it is necessary to make eliminations. I am leaning towards taking the specialist road for a couple of years and getting qualified within a specific profile, before I e.g. become a project manager. When I am a project manager one day, it will be an advantage if I am able to understand and influence every aspect of the solution.
Learning from the old guard
The relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in the workplace took me by surprise. Like many others, I thought it would be very stiff, with skirts and suits, but it is not at all like that. In fact it is a very youthful workplace, with both young and older colleagues and I could not do without any of them. I learn an awful lot from the old guard, because they have so much experience.
